Applying for the Chartered Director (C.Dir.) program is a simple process that starts with creating an account on The Directors College portal. Once registered, you can explore available programs to find the best fit for your learning goals. Complete your profile by submitting your biography, experience, and contact details to ensure a tailored learning experience. Finally, submit your application for review—once accepted, you’ll receive an email with payment instructions and next steps.

Candidates for the C.Dir. program would have:

  • senior level/executive experience

The program is designed for those currently sitting on boards, senior executives who intend to serve on a board, and those who work with boards of directors. Applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis to determine whether they are suitable candidates for the C.Dir. designation.

Virtual Registration fee: The fee is $4,480 per module and includes all sessions over the 3¼-day period, all program materials, networking, introduction to coaching, support tools, and the proctored exam.

In-Person Registration fee: The fee is $5,280 per module and includes all sessions over the 2¼-day period, hotel accommodation for two nights, all meals, all program materials, networking, introduction to coaching, support tools, and the proctored exam.

The Directors College offers several scholarships and awards to support aspiring leaders in corporate governance. The Alectra Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (ED&I) Scholarship provides full funding for the Chartered Director (C.Dir.) program to candidates from Indigenous or racialized groups. Named after former Canadian Tire Chair Gil Bennett, the Gil Bennett Gold Standard Award has been presented annually since 2006 to a Directors College graduate who excels in corporate governance through the Chartered Director (C.Dir.) program.

Continuing professional development

To uphold the highest standards of oversight and accountability, Chartered Directors are required to complete Continuing Professional Development (CPD). This commitment ensures they remain current with evolving best practices, regulatory updates, and emerging trends that shape the governance landscape.

By engaging in ongoing learning, Chartered Directors continue to strengthen their credibility, expand their insight, and enhance their impact in the boardroom and beyond.

Below are the key details regarding CPD obligations:

  • CPD is required only for Chartered Director Program graduates
  • Chartered Directors must complete a minimum of 15 hours per year, totaling 50 hours within three years
  • CPD requirements begin one year after successfully passing the final exam
  • Directors College will notify Chartered Directors who fail to meet requirements after one year of non-adherence
  • The Chartered Director Certificate (and the right to use the designation) may be suspended if a director:
    • Fails to provide evidence of meeting CPD requirements
    • Does not report CPD activities
    • Submits fraudulent CPD activity reports
    • Fails to comply with remedial plans set by the Education Committee
  • Relevant to enhancing governance skills and competencies
    • Quantifiable (i.e., must be specifically identifiable and expressed time allocated)
    • Directly related competencies needed to carry on directorship/governance activities
    • Relevant to current governance professional needs and/or longer-term interest of their governance/directorship career
    • Contain significant intellectual or practical governance content
    • Enhance their knowledge of boardroom and governance best practices.
  • Offered through a credible learning institution
  • CPD activities can include courses, seminars, workshops, conferences, postsecondary classes, structured self-study programs, guest speaking, reading, and research, and on-the-job governance training.
  • Current CPD exemptions include:
    • Retired Chartered Directors who no longer carry out board service
    • Retired Chartered Directors must submit a request for exemption with The Directors College.
    • Additional requests for exemption would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Directors College Education Committee.
