A Night of Celebration and Networking for Fall 2019 Graduates

The Directors College was pleased to celebrate its Fall 2019 Chartered Director program graduates and recognize their achievement at the Graduation and Networking Event on September 18 at the Ron Joyce Centre, DeGroote School of Business in Burlington, Ontario.

Fall 2019 Graduates

The Fall 2019 Chartered Director program graduates in attendance were happy to connect with peers and receive their university-accredited C.Dir. designations from The Directors College, a collaboration between The Conference Board of Canada and the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University.

Graduates were congratulated on their accomplishment by Dr. Leonard Waverman, Dean, DeGroote School of Business and Dr. Michael Hartmann, Principal, The Directors College. Dr. Hartmann commended graduates for “recognizing the need to invest in their ongoing education as directors to tackle the demands of increasingly uncertain and complex operating environment” he went on to assure them they are “now better prepared to tackle boardroom challenges and opportunities and make a positive contribution to the state of corporate governance in Canada.”

The evening event also featured networking with DeGroote’s Executive MBA in Digital Transformation students, alumni, and faculty and remarks on Digital Transformation Comes to the Boardroom from a distinguished panel of speakers.

Panelists
L to R: Dr. Michael Hartmann, Alfredo Tan, Michael Castro, Brian Cowan.

Panelists, and C.Dir. alumni, Michael Castro, Risk Executive Advisor and Founder, Risk Aware Group and Brian Cowan, Governance Consultant and Independent Director, were joined by Alfredo Tan, Chief Digital and Innovation Officer, WestJet. All shared engaging perspectives on innovation and its impact on boards.

The discussion was robust and varied and included perspectives on emerging disruptive technologies, cyber risks, start-ups and the role of advisory boards. Panelists encouraged senior managers and board members to give more thought to developing organizational cultures that are prepared for innovation and the risks and opportunities it brings.
