Canada’s Chartered Directors

The Directors College is pleased to present Canada’s Chartered Directors. The graduates listed below have completed The Chartered Director Program, an intensive individual examination, and have met the other requirements to become a Chartered Director (C.Dir.)

The Directors College and the Collège des administrateurs de sociétés (CAS) of Université Laval have a reciprocal agreement, whereby their respective designations – Chartered Director (C.Dir.) and Administrateur de sociétés certifié (ASC) are recognized as equivalent.

Mr. Larry Tomlin, C.Dir.
Investment Advisor, BMO Nesbitt Burns


A CMA since 1988, Larry is best known for having founded and operated an accounting practice where he served as trusted advisor to hundreds of families for over 20 years, specializing in tax planning and compliance for professionals with incorporated, family-owned businesses. During this time Larry developed an extensive reputation for hard work, attention to detail, and his engaged, attentive and caring approach to clients' tax and financial concerns.

As an entrepreneur, Larry has founded and run several successful businessesincluding: Tax To Go; an innovative high-volume retail tax preparation service; Grade School Press, an educational publisher; and The SchoolsExpo Network,an operator of a trade fair for private schools held at the Ontario Science Centre; and a property management firm.

Larry has also been actively involved in his community, serving on boards, committees or as an advisor to numerous community organizations, including several private schools and religious institutions. He has a particular interest in social housing issues and currently serves on the board and executive of Trellis Housing Initiatives, a non-profit housing provider in Toronto. Larry was instrumental in the establishment of a small-scale social housing project in Oakville and in the last two years, Larry made significant organizational contributions to a small charity which led to a successful $6 million charitable building fund project.

Among professional organizations, Larry has served as Director and President of The EFILE Association (www.efile.ca), a professional advocacy group which consults with the Canada Revenue Agency to improve the use of e-commerce technology for tax returns and other data to Canadian government agencies. For several years, Larry was also a key advisor to the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors. Larry completed his CMA designation in 1988 and in 2007 was conferred as a fellow of the Society in recognition of his extensive volunteer commitments contributions. Also In 2007, he completed the Chartered Director program from The Directors' College, a joint venture between McMaster University and the Conference Board of Canada. Larry's involvement at CMA Ontario includes: elected three times to the Board of Governors (1996, 2005, and 2008); Member, Public Policy Review Committee, Vice-Chair, Strategy and Risk Management Committee; Chair, Practice Quality Review Committee; Member, Complaints Committee; advisor to the Ethics Committee; Director, Toronto Chapter; appointed mentor and informal advisor to new private practitioners.

Larry lives in North Toronto with his wife and two children.
